7HOLLYWOOD
WORDS ILIA SYBIL SDRALLI
There is something very ethereal, almost metaphysical in Maya Mathieu’s work; she weaves her narratives as a successful artistic director and producer of visual universes. A lifelong student of fashion and the arts, the artistic director and producer’s journey through painting, sculpture, and photography has sculpted a unique vision, one that speaks to the heart of human experience. And after five transformative years in Montreal, where she founded an artistic agency representing Canadian talents, she heard the call and returned to the enchanting streets of Paris, ready to immerse herself fully in the world of art direction and production. With several art direction projects up her sleeve, she formulated a unique vision closely linked with the creative avant-garde. Then came 7HOLLYWOOD.
Mathieu’s role was pivotal in orchestrating the magazine's visual identity. Working for 7Hollywood since 2019 that is, the infamous Kim Kardashian Issue, she was and continues to be a key person inside the issue’s production and art direction strategy. "Maya’s unique vision and perfectionism has been as I’ve never seen before, and I’ve seen a lot !" notes Alix Malka, the magazine’s creative director. The pages of 7HOLLYWOOD provided the perfect background for her creative work in illustrating the article on Barbette by uniquely reinterpreting fashionably iconic images. Her work also closes the magazine with avant-gardist photos of this 7Hollywood issue’s talents, capturing their raw and authentic selves. As she highlighs the beauty of vulnerability through her fragile emulsions, a unique view on celebrities
emerges, one that we are not used to see often. Truth is, Mathieu’s use of the technique known as emulsion lifting, involves a meticulous process of transferring the delicate emulsion layer from the film to a new surface. This alchemical transformation produces raw artworks that is not only visually striking but also imbued with a tactile, organic visual quality that differs. Her artistic approach transcends conventions, blending the material and intangible worlds to offer a vision that embraces both the fragility and strength of human expression. Mathieu crafts precious narratives as celebrations of the truly authentic within the often surface beautiful in fashion. She seeks another kind of beauty, the one that really matters.
